During his long career in journalism, Jock Anderson has spent many hours in courtrooms talking to members of the legal profession. He can be contacted at jockanderson123@gmail.com. Unfortunately, I still haven`t caught fish there. I`ve eaten sea fish in the North Island all the time, and it`s so easy to catch fish at sea, but I don`t seem to master the technique here. We go to twizel on Labor weekend, so I catch fish. Aoraki Legal will continue to be a general practice focused on real estate law, estates, wills, trusts, elderly law and labour law. I arrived in Timaru on April 19, 2010 because there was a job offer at Quentin Hix. I thought, “Why should I go to Timaru,” and then I thought, “Why shouldn`t I? I had only been to the South Island once, three days in Christchurch. Twizel is my favorite holiday destination in New Zealand, but don`t tell anyone. Vicki has a house there. And we love the Department of Public Works and other bars. He joined Aoraki Legal about three years ago to become a partner, followed by his colleague Pauline-Jean Luyten. I don`t get to read much outside of work, but I love watching movies and I`ve seen all three Of The Godfather movies lately.

The Godfather 3 is the best. I`ve never seen this before and I`m still confused, so I have to see it again to get all the little nuances and who was friends with whom. They previously worked together at another Timaru firm and joined Aoraki Legal Ltd 3 years ago. Paul Tyler and Pauline-Jean Luyten bought the law firm Timaru Aoraki Legal Ltd from Mark Clark, Timaru`s long-time lawyer. Paul and his partner Vicki McConnochie live in a large, sprawling house next to Timaru`s Aigantighe Art Gallery, minutes from his office. His parents are retired and live in Peacehaven on the coast of East Sussex in England. Peacehaven was originally founded to retire World War 1 veterans so they could escape and recover from the effects of war, hence its name. My favorite place abroad is Koh Samui in Thailand. We like to babble there. And Dubai and Paris. I talked a lot about Europe when I lived in the UK.

Unfortunately, we can`t have experienced lawyers here, and it`s hard to keep those who are. The lawyers come to Timaru for two years, do their EO and are then taken to work elsewhere. A fan of David Bowie, Paul leads a local band called Should be Band. I`m supposed to be their manager. I don`t get paid and I`m not blamed for everything. It`s probably fine in the air, but when I drove a jumbo jet, you`re so far from the ground and I don`t like it. And I need my glasses to see the instruments in front of me, which means I can`t see everything else properly. I went sea fishing in Whakatane for 16 months and had fun after quitting my job. I traveled a little bit around the country, enjoyed life and saw a few things. Brentford is famous for two things – Brentford Nylons – and they went bankrupt, and Brentford Football Club, and they were demoted. Mark, who is 71 years old and expected to slow down, remains an advisor to the company.

A former partner, Russell List, passed away in 2016. Born in Brentford, West London, Paul`s father from London – a miller who made parts for marine engines and his mother from Newcastle – did many different jobs. “I have a brother who runs England`s biggest amateur football club and a sister who works in the health sector.” When I was 25, I met a girl from Cambridge and decided to come here. His son Jim is now a skilled builder and is about to climb Kilimanjaro. I didn`t even know he was a mountaineer. His daughter Chantelle is finishing her third year as a lawyer and is articling at McCaw Lewis in Hamilton.â After her second marriage didn`t work out and there were no other lawyers in the family, Paul wasn`t sure what he wanted to do. After a few years at a construction company that worked in procurement and purchasing, Paul landed a management position at TNT Couriers before starting a dry cleaning business. Another lawyer, Norm Scott, is the drummer, along with Kelvin Ayson, Grant Williams, the lead singer, and Simon Kemp. They never listen to what I say and blame me for not having a van, because they don`t have any money. They`re a rock `n` roll band that does stuff from the 70s to the 90s and plays a few times a year.

I grow my own garlic and chillies and there are always things in the garden – salads, peas, potatoes, cucumbers. I had five-figure numbers every day that I had to balance. I added them up and if it came to the figure at the bottom, which is still £400 million, then I would tick the box and give it to my supervisor. I love seeing All Blacks and motorsport like Formula One. I used to play a lot of golf and I had a single-digit handicap, but I had to play four times a week to get there and I didn`t have time to maintain it. There was no official interview, it was only by phone. I rented an apartment to live without seeing it, and I stayed in this company for almost five years – two of them as a manager. I went to high school, but before I left school, I was a butcher intern. After leaving school, I got a job at Lloyds Bank headquarters in accounting. Former London motorcyclist Paul Tyler – who made a living delivering packages to Buckingham Palace, the Old Bailey and various stars like Cilla Black and comedian Jimmy Tarbuck – went fishing for fun between two legal jobs before moving to Timaru. If it didn`t fit together, I would still give it to my supervisor.

It was my job, very boring. But there was always a big scramble when something went wrong with some of the checks.â Paul was called to the bar in 2006 and Pauline in 2005. “I hate cats” they shit all over my lawn, dig up vegetables, scratch trees, kill birds and put fur on our outdoor furniture. We don`t own a cat, but a dozen of them walk around our property. I love dogs. I brew my own beer and stick to dark beer because I find it easier to brew. Mine is average and I like it. “I love the cooking programs – Masterchef and Heston Blumenthal, but I can`t cook anything he does. Vicki and I take turns cooking. If I wasn`t a lawyer, I`d like to be a pilot, but I don`t like heights, which limits things a bit. I always wanted to be a lawyer or an airline pilot. Fortunately, I was not an airline pilot.

â I love gardening and I have an area of 1500 m², next to the Aigantighe art gallery in Timaru, with a large greenhouse and there is always something to eat in the garden.â I played the violin very badly – Three blind mice – and I can make green sleeves on the recorder and type a triangle.â I am also a fan of Blur, the largest group with Oasis in the 1990s. Blur`s Parklife is always the last song of our band. Then came the global financial crisis and everyone was fired. It was really a bad time to present my resignation. Our experienced and qualified team focuses on providing practical results and ensuring that your solution is delivered efficiently and reliably. One of the best things about life in Timaru is the price of houses. Vicki and I like to socialize, mix and mingle. I am a member of the South Canterbury Club and I love going to work.

As the first in his family to go to university, Paul enrolled in Waikato for four years, then started working in Whakatane, where he stayed for a few years before stopping the idea of moving to Auckland. I like a good thriller, a good thriller and espionage. For my sins, I also love The Block on TV. But I don`t look at Coronation Street, so that`s a plus. My first time in court in Whakatane was memorable to make a notice to be repaired, and I needed an order. My boss was gone and my colleagues said it was too much for me. But I had to do it. Fortunately, I had a good judge, Louis Bidois. “I came to New Zealand in 1989, attracted to a Kiwi woman from Cambridge,” says Paul, who recently took over Aoraki Legal from Mark Clark, a long-time Practitioner of Timaru, along with his colleague Pauline-Jean Luyten.
